United States Commission on Civil Rights
MAS-MN Vice President Sheikh Hassan Jamii was elected to serve as a member on
the Minnesota Advisory Committee, a division of the United States Commission on
Civil Rights. Jamii, who is a lawyer by profession, also serves as Imam of
Masjid at-Taqwa in Saint Paul.
The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, first established by Congress in 1957 and
reestablished in 1983, is directed to collect information relating to
discrimination or denial of equal protection of the laws under the Constitution
and investigate complaints alleging that citizens are being deprived of their
right to vote by reason of their race, color, religion, sex, age, disability or
national origin.
"I am honored to be a part of this noble group," said Jamii. "As Muslims, we are
required to support any good that is taking place. I hope that I can contribute
positively."
Jamii's term expires in 2005. Jamii is also heading up the MAS-MN chapter of the
MAS Freedom Foundation, the civil rights arm of the Muslim American Society.
